FanSpot FAQ
GENERAL
Q. Is FanSpot free?
A. It sure is! Every feature and function you currently see on the site
is absolutely free. FanSpot is supported entirely by advertising. In the
future, FanSpot may add paid Premium Services, but all the features and
functions you currently enjoy on FanSpot will always remain free!
Q. I have an account already but I can't log in?
A. Please verify that you are logging in with the correct password and
email. We also recommend clearing your browser's cookies and temporary
internet files and then trying to log in again. If you have already tried
the methods above, check to make sure your profile still exists by finding
your profile on the site. Also, look for comments you posted on your friends'
profiles. If you cannot find your profile, it may have been deleted. FanSpot
may delete profiles if they violate the site's Terms
and Conditions. You cannot retrieve a deleted account. You can contact
us here. Note: Mac users should use Safari or Firefox for the
best browsing results.
Q. I forgot my password. How can I retrieve it?
A. Retrieve your password by clicking here
and following the instructions. You will
need to enter the email address that we have on file for your account. We'll
then email your password to that address.
Q. Someone on FanSpot is harassing/threatening me. What can be
done about it?
A. There's a big difference between annoying and threatening. If someone
threatens you, find the Contact link at the bottom any of the FanSpot
pages and send us a message immediately.
Q. Where do I report inappropriate content?
A. If there is something on the profile itself that is inappropriate,
look at the bottom of the profile and click on the Contact link and send
us a message.
Q. Where do I report spammers?
A. Please contact us through the Contact link at the bottom of all FanSpot
pages with the URL to the profile of a spammer, and details of how you
were spammed.
Q. Where do I report underage users?
A. Users must be at least 14 to join. According to the Terms
of Service, if a user is under 14 and is misrepresenting their age,
the account may be deleted. If you have sighted a user under 18 years
of age on Fanspot.com, please contact
us with the URL or friend ID number and we will remove it.
Q. How do I remove my child's profile from FanSpot?
A. Please work with your child to remove the account. Once you are logged
into the site, click on "Edit Profile" and then simply delete the information
from the various fields. Click the "Save Profile" button found at the
bottom of the page. Please alert us
with the URL to the profile in question, and we can remove the profile
in its entirety for you.
Q. How do I report a copyright violation?
A. If you believe that your copyright-protected work has been copied and
posted on Fanspot.com in a way that constitutes copyright infringement,
please provide our Copyright Agent with the following information: (i)
an electronic or physical signature of the person authorized to act on
behalf of the owner of the copyright interest; (ii) a description of the
copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed; (iii) a description
of where the material that you claim is infringing is located on the Web
site; (iv) your address, telephone number, and email address; (v) a written
statement by you that you have a good faith belief that the disputed use
is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; (vi)
a statement by you that the above information in your notice is accurate
and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or authorized
to act on the copyright owner's behalf. Please contact us here.
Q. How do I report a site error?
A. You can report errors by visiting the Contact
link at the bottom of any page of FanSpot Simply pick the appropriate
tab to send FanSpot an e-mail.
PROFILE
Q. How do I change my personal information?
A. You may change your name, age, and/or add to the information on your Profile
through "Edit Profile" which appears on both your home page and
in the top right hand corner of most every page on the site. You may edit or
add information from the following categories: Basics, About Me, Sports Life,
Interests. Be sure to Save Profile and your changes will be effective
immediately.
Q. How do I send pictures from my camera phone?
A. You can upload photos instantly to your Photo Album just by sending them from your camera phone to mobi@fanspot.com! Once you send the image, it is added to a Photo Album in your profile called 'My Mobile Phone Photos' (which you can rename if you want.) If your phone supports it, you can even type in a message which will display with the image on your Photo Album. Make sure you add your mobile phone number on the Basics
tab of the Edit Profile page before sending photos.
- Supported phone carriers include: Cingular, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile
and Sprint. Also, not to worry... your mobile phone number is kept private
and only used for the purpose of uploading pictures to your profile!
Q. How do I add color, graphics and sound to my home page?
A. Customizing your home page is easy. The "Edit Profile" area allows
you to upload both a Profile photo - this is the image that represents
you across the site - and a background image for your page. You can also
change the overall color scheme of your page by selecting one of our pre-made
page styles or you can program in your own style sheet using HTML (the
programming language used to create web pages on the Internet). If you
do not know HTML, you can reach out and make a new friend by asking someone
who has color, graphics, and/or sound on their Profile page how they did
it. You can always find someone
on FanSpot who is willing to help!
Q. Why is my Profile page suddenly messed up? It has music, sound
or strange graphics on it.
A. Your Profile page may suddenly change and/or appear messed up for a couple
of reasons. Either your HTML code is erroneous (maybe you forgot to close a
tag, etc.), or someone else added an HTML comment or challenge on your page.
While only you have secure access to edit your own Profile page, others can
place HTML code when leaving a comment or challenge on your Profile page. If
you feel you have caused the problem yourself through improperly implementing
HTML code on your Profile page, simply troubleshoot your HTML code to determine
where the error is, and fix it. In the worst-case scenario, you may need to
remove all your HTML coding (DO NOT delete your Profile), and start your HTML
coding again from scratch. If the problem lies in a Comment that someone else
left on your page, simply delete it. Though there is not always an easy way
of identifying which Comment contains the embedded HTML code, you can often
narrow it down by observing when the problem first occurred... i.e., if everything
was fine until Comment "X" was added, then try deleting Comment "X" and
see if the problem is solved. We strongly encourage you to attempt to resolve
these issues yourself using the above solutions.
Q. How do I change my default picture?
A. Go to the "Edit Profile" link in the upper right hand corner of your
profile and click. You can upload a new default photo and save it. DO
NOT upload photos containing nudity, sexually explicit content, violent
or offensive material, copyrighted images, or any images of other people
without their permission.
Q. I'm trying to upload an image, and I am getting an error message...
what is wrong?
A. First, make sure the image you are attempting to upload is in the correct
format - FanSpot only accepts .jpg files. Next, make
sure the filename is simple and short, with no spaces or funny characters.
"Image. jpg" is a good filename "Me at the beach! Drinking
some beer~~.jpg" is not going to work. Next, make sure the file size
is less than 600k. We do not allow images over 600k. If none of these
things work, it's possible that the image is corrupted.
Q. How do I change my email address?
A. Changes to your email address, password, etc. can be made in the "Edit
Profile" area. The "Edit Profile" link appears in the upper right corner
of just about every page. Once there, type in the new email address you
want to use and click on "Save Profile." You will receive an
email to your old address asking you to confirm the email change. Follow
the link in the email and confirm the code and your email will be changed.
If you do not have access to your old email account, please Contact
us with the old email address, the password for the account and the
email address you want to change it to.
Q. How many times can you rate a page?
A. You can rate a page as many times as you want, but only the last vote
counts (in case you change your mind.)
FRIENDS & RIVALS
Q. Can I add anyone as my friend?
A. You can try, but it must be mutually agreeable. There are two ways to add
people to your personal list of friends.
- You can invite new people to join FanSpot. If they sign-up through the link
in the invitational email, they will automatically be added to your
list of friends.
- Second, you can request to add anyone who's Profile you see on FanSpot to
your personal list of friends. Simply click on "Add to Friends"
in anyone's Profile page; this link appears in the section beside the
person's picture. That person will then be able to approve or deny your
request to be added to your list of friends. You may add as many people
to your friends list as you'd like.
Q. Can I add anyone as my rival?
A. In short, yes. There are two ways to add people to your personal list of
rivals, and they are similar, but not the same, as the procedures for adding
friends:
- Invite them to join FanSpot. If they sign-up through the Invite a Rival link
you send them, they will automatically be added to your list of rivals.
- Add anyone whose Profile you see on FanSpot to your personal list of rivals.
From the Profile page of the person you would like to add to your personal
list of rivals, simply click on "Add to Rivals," in the section
beside the person's picture. The person you add will automatically join
your list of rivals - they get no say in the process.
Q. Can I change the order of my friends or rivals list?
A. You can change the order in which your friends appear on your list in the Manage Friends/Rivals link on your "Home" page. Simply drag and drop your friends or rivals in the order you want and Save your changes. Your top 9 friends or rivals are highlighted at the top of the page.
Q. How can I delete friends/rivals from my Friends or Rivals List
on my Profile?
A. To remove a person from your Friends List, start by clicking "Home"
in the top navigation menu from any FanSpot web page. Once on your personal
home page, locate the manage Friends/Rivals link. Click on that and you
will see a listing of all your friends and rivals. Simply click the "X"
next to their Fanspot name and they will be removed.
Q. What is that icon that appears next to my name on my profile
page? What does it mean?
A. The light bulb icon that appears at the end of your name above your photo
shows that you are currently online. If you are visiting someone else's
profile and they have the light bulb icon that means they are also online.
GROUPS
Q. What is a group?
A. A group is a collection of people that have similar interests or passions. A group can be formed to support a team, a player, a sport, or just about anything.
Q. Who can start a group?
A. Anyone can start a group. Pick a name for your group and then pick a catchy short description about what your group will be all about. You can also make a longer description that really gets down to the nitty-gritty aspects of your group.
Q. Who can join a group?
A. If you like what you see in the title of a group feel free to join in and start swapping stories or photos. All groups are open to the public.
Q. No one is joining my group what do I do?
A. You might want to make your group broader in its appeal. Maybe instead of a group about one specific player try opening your group to talk about the whole team. You can also invite people to join your group.
Q. Can I change the name of my group?
A. Yes, you can change the name of your group but you might want to be careful that it doesn't change the topic too much.
CHALLENGES
Q. What is a challenge?
A. Here is your chance to call out one of your friends or rivals. You
can challenge them to a contest of skill or you can represent your favorite
team or athlete in a challenge concerning the outcome of a game. Challenges
can be anything you want them to be as long as you can decide on a clear
winner or loser. If you can't decide then chances are the rest of the
FanSpot community can decide for you in the Make the Call section of FanSpot.
Q. What type of challenges are there?
A. You can challenge one of your friends or rivals to a fan versus fan
challenge.
You can challenge all your rivals to the same challenge (i.e. your favorite
team will be their favorite team). You can offer up an open challenge
to anyone and everyone in FanSpot on anything. Remember you can never
bet cash, cash equivalents, or something that the FanSpot management team
thinks is absurdly dangerous.
Q. How do I issue a challenge?
A. Move your mouse to the Challenges header and select Challenge Central
from the drop down box. You can issue an open challenge by clicking on
the Create Open Challenge box beside your photo. You can Call Out A Fan
from their profile page. In either instance you need to name your challenge,
pick the stakes, describe the challenge, and pick an end date.
Q. What is the Title?
A. The title should be a quick name or headline for your challenge.
Q. What are the Stakes?
A. The stakes are whatever you want to offer up as part of your challenge.
Remember you cannot wager cash or a cash equivalent (i.e. gift cards, checks,
gold bullion, etc.). Make it fun but realize you might lose so don't
go too crazy.
Q. What is the Description?
A. This should be an explanation of your challenge. Be as specific as possible
and make sure you cover all your bases.
Q. What is the End Date?
A. If you want your challenge to only last a few days or a week you need to
set a time limit. Enter that here. If you are making a challenge that is
event related put the date of the event here.
Q. What is the Limit?
A. When you create an open challenge, you specify how many people can accept it. You can challenge up to 10 people per open challenge. Just remember if you lose
you'll have to pay up. You can set the limit at one person or ten,
it just depends... do you feel lucky?
Q. Who can I challenge?
A. You can challenge anyone on FanSpot as long as they agree to accept
your challenge.
Q. Do I have to accept a challenge?
A. No, you do not have to accept someone's challenge.
Q. What if I want to change or modify a challenge, can I do that?
A. If it is an Open Challenge, you can only accept it as written. But if it is another member Calling You Out, then the answer is absolutely. You can change or modify a challenge as long as you do that before you accept the challenge. If you change a challenge, then the other person has to accept the revisions before it is an officially recognized challenge.
Q. What happens when I accept a challenge or someone accepts mine?
A. To see the challenge, go to Challenge Central or click on Manage Challenges
from your Home Page. You will see all the challenges you are participating
in. First thing you need to do is decide who has won by selecting the
Fanspot name of the winner. Add in any comments you may have about the
results and click Submit. The other person will have their own opportunity
to decide who wins. If all are in Agreement, then whoever is "paying up"
on the challenge needs to provide proof that they have paid up and that
would be the end of the Challenge.
However, if there is disagreement about who is the winner, or whether the loser has actually paid up on the challenge, then the challenge automatically goes to You Make the Call. Your fellow Fanspot members will make the call as to who is the winner. Just in case you are tempted to try it, you cannot vote in You Make the Call if you are one of the challengers. All results of You Make the Call are final!
Q. How do I remove myself from a challenge after I already accepted it?
A. You can't remove yourself from a challenge. When you're in, you?re in.
Q. I think I won my challenge but the person I challenged thinks he
won. What do I do?
A. When you disagree on the winner of a challenge your challenge will
go to the court of public opinion known as You Make The Call and the members
of FanSpot will review your original challenge, the outcome and your comments.
They will vote on who they think won the challenge and issue a ruling
by democratic vote. Their decision is final.
Q. How long do I have to respond to a Challenge once the end
date passes?
A. If neither party to the Challenge takes action by choosing a winner or loser, the Challenge will drop off from the Challenge page 72 hours after the end date of the Challenge.
Q. How long do I have to respond as a winner or loser?
A. Once someone in the Challenge chooses a winner or loser, the other person must respond within 72 hours. If they do not, then the first response will determine the winner. For example: You respond that you are the winner of a Challenge. If the other person does not respond within 72 hours, then you automatically win the Challenge and earn the points.
Q. What is You Make The Call?
A. When two sides can't decide who is the winner then the FanSpot community
can vote on who they think the winner should be.
Q. What is Pick A Side?
A. When you ?Pick A Side? you are simply weighing in on various topics
of interest to the FanSpot community. This is your opportunity to have
your FanSpot voice be heard.
Q. What are the different Statistics categories that show up on my
profile page?
A. Your stats are recognized in the standard sports format. We keep track of your wins, your losses, the number of challenges you have participated in, and your winning percentage.
Q. What is a Welch-o-meter? How does it work?
A. The Welch-o-meter recognizes the number of times you either paid off
on a losing challenge or didn't pay off on a challenge. If you don't pay-up
then your Welch-o-meter dips closer to recognizing you as a chump, but
if you pay off your challenges in a timely fashion or you win most of
your challenges then your Welch-o-meter swings you closer to being a champ.
